PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES
Quality Assurance
Between August 2004 and June 2005, KEREA in collaboration with the University of California at Berkeley and Humboldt State University in the USA carried out tests on five brands of Amorphous Silicon solar modules dominating the Kenyan market.
Results: Of the five brands, two failed.
Remedy: Vendors were asked to stop selling such panels.
KEREA member companies voluntarily stopped importing the failed brands.
Kenya PV Capacity Building Project:
The association has been involved in an IFC funded capacity-building project
aimed at steering the PV market growth in the country. Under this project,
KEREA has coordinated and facilitated several activities:
a) Development of solar PV manuals (PV installers Technical manual, PV Technical sales manual, PV End Users manual) through Energy for Sustainable Development Africa (ESDA).
b) Development of PV curriculum for training solar technicians through RENCON Associates Ltd.
c) Examination, certification, and enlistment of technicians trained as part of the project into a central database of trained, qualified, and certified practitioners
d) Field-testing of installed Solar Home Systems across the country to establish the general performance of installed systems and the quality of design and installation.
e) PV Market awareness campaigns including the development and airing of a PV slogan which has been aired on radio.
The following activities are also underway:
- Development and launch of the KEREA business plan.
- Further development and printing of three technical solar manuals that we developed during the project.
- Certifying and Supporting trained technicians.
- KEREA is also looking into collaborating with KIRDI to develop a project to facilitate the uptake of solar water heating systems.
